What if every woman simply took a day off...? To mark International Women's Day, the Deutsches Theater (DT) will screen Pamela Hogan's film "A Day Without Women" (2024) on March 7th, about the historic women's strike in Iceland in 1975.
When 90 percent of Icelandic women walked off the job and left their homes one autumn morning in 1975, refusing to work, cook, or care for their children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to "the best place in the world to be a woman."
Told for the first time by the women themselves and featuring playful animation, "A Day Without Women" is subversive and unexpectedly funny. "We loved our chauvinistic pigs," one of the activists recalls, "we just wanted to change them a little!"
Released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the strike in 2025, the film's message about the collective power of women to transform their society encourages us to rethink what is possible. *A Day Without Women* celebrated its world premiere at the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, Canada, and has since been screened at numerous festivals worldwide. The film won Best Documentary at the Nordic Film Days and the Audience Award at the Mind the Gap Festival in the USA.
Directed by Pamela Hogan, produced by Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir
International Women's Day at the Deutsches Theater: For more than 100 years, women have been fighting and striking on March 8th for their rights, visibility, and solidarity.
FYI: To kick off this year's International Women's Day on March 7th, a working group of female Deutsches Theater staff members has curated a feminist program. In the Box, Pamela Hogan's film *A Day Without Women* (2024) about the historic 1975 women's strike in Iceland will be screened.
Afterwards, Almut Zilcher will read texts by Nino Haratischwili in a joint event with the author. Julischka Eichel and Abak Safaei-Rad will host a live edition of their podcast *Kantinengespräche* (Canteen Conversations) in the bar, where they will discuss with guests from various departments of the Deutsches Theater (DT): What is it like to work as a woman in the theater? Afterwards, everyone is invited to celebrate March 8th with DJ FRZNTE.
All are welcome!
