Lecture series on the art history of the Tiergarten district
For his new villa in Berlin's Tiergarten district, the Königsberg-born banker Benoit Oppenheim (1842–1931) assembled one of Germany's most important private sculpture collections between 1900 and 1911.
After the First World War, he dispersed the collection with the same energy. Today, the largest groups of Oppenheim's works are located in Berlin and Munich, while other pieces can be found in renowned private and public collections worldwide.
Although Oppenheim documented his collection in a two-volume catalog, he never sought publicity—many of his contemporaries had no idea what treasures were hidden in his villa.
Speaker: Dr. Matthias Weniger was the curator for sculpture and painting before 1550 at the Bavarian National Museum in Munich from 2003 to 2025, since 2019 he has been head of provenance research and since 2025 in the provenance team of the State Museums Agency Bavaria.
