The history of the council movements

‘Everything must be done yourself’ is a book about people who say that things cannot go on like this and who decide to take their fate into their own hands.

In the streets of Paris in 1871, in the factories of Petrograd in 1917, in the towns and villages of northern Syria, and in the jungles of Chiapas, social conflicts and uprisings gave rise to councils – self-organised associations in all areas of society.

They don't just protest, they start to reshape their entire lives. Christopher Wimmer uses vivid scenes to describe how such movements arise and function – and why they often fail.
