Jörg Widmann, conductor

Ten years after its performance at the Musikfest Berlin in 2016, Wolfgang Rihm's irrepressible Artaud ritual Tutuguri will once again be heard at the Philharmonie Berlin in 2026, this time interpreted by the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra.

The performance, conducted by artistic director Jörg Widmann, is dedicated to Wolfgang Rihm, who died in 2024 and who shaped the Lucerne Festival Academy as its artistic director and the Musikfest Berlin with his works over many years.

Tutuguri occupies a unique position in Wolfgang Rihm's extremely prolific oeuvre. In no other work does the composer unleash such unbridled elemental forces; nowhere else does rhythm and impressive percussion take center stage as much as in this score, the last part of which is performed solely by six solo percussionists—accompanied by a choir played over loudspeakers.
