40 Jahre. Ganz unten. | Literature

When Günter Wallraff’s 1985 work of undercover journalism, Ganz unten (Lowest of the Low), was initially published, the book – which describes the working conditions of guest workers – sold five million copies, and translations were released in 40 countries. The biggest misunderstanding, up to today, is that it’s not a book about the »Alis«, but rather a reckoning with the Exploiter-Alfreds on top.

That’s why the author and his publisher have been sued and persecuted for years. Ganz unten describes »a piece of apartheid in the midst of democracy«. Taking Ali Levent’s place are the wage slaves of today, the food-delivery cyclists and parcel carriers. Together Mely and Günter take a look at 40 years of Ganz unten, which has never ceased to exist.
