A musical reading about the life and work of composer Jan Meyerowitz, who was persecuted during the Nazi era
As part of the exhibition "Charter Flight into the Past - 50 Years of the Berlin Senate's Visiting Program for Victims of Nazi Persecution", the Mitte Museum presentsthe musical reading "Noel far from Home", which sheds light on the life and persecution of the composer Jan Meyerowitz (1913-1998) during the Nazi era.

The reading combines selected compositions by Meyerowitz with texts based on historical documents and personal testimonies. These tell the story of his life - from his early years in Berlin through the period of persecution to his artistic struggles in exile and afterwards. The texts will be read by Jamal Walmsley, Samar El-Kailani and Anas El-Saleh, members of the AG Erinnern (Remembrance Working Group) of the Theodor-Heuss-Gemeinschaftsschule.
Baritone Simon Wallfisch will interpret Meyerowitz's music, accompanied on the piano by Daniel Seroussi. Under the artistic and dramaturgical direction of Elisabeth Kahn, music, readings and historical references merge into a moving portrait of a composer who survived persecution and exile and struggled for artistic recognition after the war.
Jan Meyerowitz, who graduated from Berlin's Grunewald-Gymnasium and studied with renowned composers such as Walter Gmeindl, Alexander Zemlinsky and Ottorino Respighi, survived imprisonment in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, internment in France and a period underground under a false name. After the war, he emigrated to the USA, later returned to France and died in Colmar in 1998.
"Noel far from Home" brings this moving story to life through music and documentary, sheds light on the life achievements of a persecuted composer and invites the audience to reflect on memory, resistance and cultural heritage.
