In 2022, Memorial received the Nobel Peace Prize—and was banned in Russia on the same day. But the organization remains the un silenced voice of critical public opinion. For over 30 years, Memorial has been fighting for reconciliation and human rights, continuing today from exile, among others through Zukunft Memorial e. V. in Berlin.
Renowned voices such as Aleida Assmann, Anne Applebaum, Karl Schlögel, Herta Müller, and Svetlana Alexievich recall the courage of the dissidents and ask: How can Russia's critical memory be preserved at a time when the first victim of war is the truth?
Irina Scherbakowa is a historian, cultural scientist, and Germanist. As a founding member of Memorial, she shaped the organization's work for more than 30 years. Today, she is chairwoman of Zukunft Memorial and lives in exile in Tel Aviv and Berlin.
