The Museum of European Cultures (MEK) was founded in 1999 as a merger of several museum collections, but its roots stretch back deep into the 19th century.
This lecture will take you on a journey through the convoluted history of Berlin's folklore and ethnographic museums, from their beginnings through the period of German division to reunification and finally to the creation of the MEK. The focus will be not only on the institution's history, but also on the question of which objects were collected, when, for what reasons, and under what political circumstances. Museum history will thus be told as a history of collections and a reflection of social and political developments.
The lecture will be rounded off with an exclusive look behind the scenes during a visit to the museum depot.
