The former Central Animal Laboratories of the Free University of Berlin, better known as the "Mäusebunker," were built between 1971 and 1981 according to the designs of Magdalena and Gerd Hänska. Together with the Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology (1969–74), designed by Fehling + Gogel, and the Benjamin Franklin Hospital (Curtis & Davis, 1961–68), the building forms a unique ensemble.
The "Mouse Bunker," in particular, gained international recognition as an icon of Brutalism due to its striking aesthetics.
After its closure in 2019, the Charité, the State Office for Monument Protection, and the Senate Administration concluded an agreement in 2022 to explore future use and development options in a pilot project. Since 2023, the "Mouse Bunker," like the neighboring Institute for Hygiene, has been a listed building. Specific plans for subsequent use have not yet been made public.
