Panel discussion
Artists from Iran, Afghanistan and Sudan talk about courage, creativity and resistance in exile. In discussions, readings and music, they shed light on the role of art and language in human rights, freedom of expression and social change in autocratic countries.
In this event, we will hold a panel discussion with artists in exile to explore the role of culture as a voice in democracy and human rights movements in autocratic societies, such as the significance of songs in the recent protests in Iran as part of the women's rights movement surrounding the death of Mahsa Amini.
What did it mean to write poetry and books as a woman in Afghanistan? What inspires a young Sudanese man to express his opinion through rap, to give words to a movement? And how high is the risk? How direct or indirect can/must language be in order to name the unspeakable and the forbidden and give it social power
Through conversation, music and readings, we will witness the courage to use art to strengthen human rights and freedom of expression.
An event organised by Martin-Niemöller-Haus Berlin-Dahlem e.V. in cooperation with the Teltow-Zehlendorf church district, the Diakonisches Werk Steglitz-Zehlendorf (DWSTZ) and Mosaik Erzählwerkstatt/KIEZconnect
in the languages: Dari, Farsi, Arabic, German.
