The precarious situation of youth has increasingly come into focus, not just since the controversial Netflix production "Adolescence" from 2025. Adolescent masculinities and their social socialization, in particular, are increasingly being problematized on a media and discursive level.

Their visibility has increased massively and discursively, not only in artistic photography but also through social media. Nevertheless, to date, there are only few studies on the intersections of masculinity, adolescence, and their visual representation in social, cultural, and image studies or photo-historical research.

In exchange with photographers and scholars, the symposium will, for the first time, illuminate the connections, correlations, and differences between the visual and sociological discourses on young men.

What is the relationship between academic findings and artistic practice on male adolescents, and how do they differ? How does photography change or determine discourses on male adolescents? How can academic and visual discourses on youth and their knowledge politics be described? What impact do visual (self-)representations on social media have on male adolescents?
