Scenic reading 75 years of ‘In Memory of Klaus Mann’ (in German): The last volume published by the German-language exile publishing house Querido Amsterdam was and is dedicated to one of the most important figures in this institution: Klaus Mann.
It was published in 1950 – 75 years ago. Even the book cover is interesting: it lists all the authors, i.e. Klaus Mann's companions. Among them is Gottfried Benn, who had become involved with Nazi ideology and therefore came into serious conflict with Klaus Mann.
The foreword by his father Thomas Mann is also explosive. He and his wife saw no reason to interrupt a lecture tour of Sweden to attend their son's funeral in Cannes.
Based on diary entries, letters and the texts of the book, the staged reading reconstructs the eventful history of these often tense relationships and at the same time draws parallels to the political and social challenges of their time – and our own.
Frank Träger is the founder and chairman of the Klaus Mann Initiative Berlin e.V. and will moderate the evening.
