Exhibition in St. Matthew's Church
"Godspeed in 4/4 Time" is a new composition and expansive artwork by Dutch artist William Engelen, who spent 2024 as artist-in-residence at St. Matthew's Church.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the St. Matthew's Foundation, William Engelen will decorate St. Matthew's Church with a curtain of 366 metal sound tubes running beneath the galleries, depicting the individual days of the year 2024.
Each tube differs in its dimensions and material: copper represents the major religious holidays and the keynote above the altar, brass represents the full moons, stainless steel represents the artist's personal time, and aluminum represents all other days. Together, the 366 sound tubes form a graphic score that creates a room-filling, sounding calendar of the church year.
Both musicians, who will perform a composition by William Engelen in concerts, and visitors can play the instrument, thus bringing the church and the year to life. A play with time and eternity:
The sound rhythms of the days, weeks, and months, everyday life and holidays, the church year and the calendar year, and the longing for eternity resonate together.
The exhibition is supported by the Association for Exhibitions and Christian Art, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Berlin, and the Mondriaan Fund for Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage.
