West German democracy and those persecuted by the Nazi regime

In her new book Unerwünscht (2025), Stefanie Schüler-Springorum portrays post-war West German society from the perspective of people who were persecuted under National Socialism.

She focuses on the experiences of surviving Jews and Sinti and Roma, former forced laborers and homosexuals. After 1945, they were affected to varying degrees by continued discrimination and persecution and faced decades of struggles for recognition of the injustice they had suffered. The common image of the successful democratization of the Federal Republic of Germany is torn apart by these stories.

The experiences of those formerly persecuted by the Nazis show that the hatred and resentment against them did not simply disappear; they were deeply rooted in the minds of many people and in some cases still are today.
