Willy Brandt and German unity
"Now what belongs together is growing together". Willy Brandt's quote from November 10, 1989, the day after the fall of the Berlin Wall, has become a catchphrase for the unification process.
Just one year later, on October 3, 1990, the former Chancellor stood in the VIP gallery at midnight at the ceremony in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin alongside Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker, Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher. He witnessed the realization of German unity with tears in his eyes.
What made the events of 1989/90 so special for Willy Brandt? What part did his policies towards the East and Germany play in overcoming the division of Germany? And why was German unity only conceivable for him in a European context? Follow us on an exciting themed tour through the Forum Willy Brandt Berlin.
