Theatertreffen 2025 | Forum Theatertreffen 1965–2025
Three playwrights, three perspectives on the present: Philipp Heule, Anastasiia Kosodii and Kay Matter illuminate current issues and conflicts in their plays in a multifaceted way. How do they view their art of writing and its power and relevance for contemporary theatre?
The names of many acclaimed playwrights can be found in the history of the International Forum. The beauty of contemporary drama lies in the multiplicity of its language, form and style. Six authors – Emre Akal, Philippe Heule, Anastasiia Kosodii, Kay Matter, Nele Stuhler and Olivia Wenzel – present excerpts from their plays in two events.
These will be read by Mareike Beykirch, Christian Erdmann, David Guy Kono, Mercy Dorcas Otieno and Leon Pfannenmüller – actors who were also part of the International Forum. Afterwards we want to talk: about writing, the creation of worlds and the relevance of playwriting in our present.
Philippe Heule’s dramatic writing uses a precise and often rhythmic language to engage with social and existential themes such as queer masculinity. Anastasiia Kosodii represents a theatre of subtle and intense emotion where she tells of current and painful conflicts, such as the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Kay Matter’s plays are full of tender poetry and great clarity: he writes with a profound sensitivity and great affection for his characters on issues including the climate emergency and the deformation of our world.
