Karin Prien says she does not want to interfere in children’s bedrooms. “But we need to make it much clearer to parents what impact their behaviour has on their children’s development.”
By this, the Federal Minister for Family Affairs means not only children’s screen time, but also that of their parents. For Karin Prien, one thing is certain: children under the age of three should have no contact whatsoever with digital devices. And the CDU politician wants to introduce an age limit of 13 for social media. The mother of three has been Federal Minister for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth since 2025. Prior to that, she served for many years as a state minister in Schleswig-Holstein. Karin Prien completed her degree, specialising in ‘International Trade Law’, in Amsterdam, her city of birth. In 1979, she became a member of the Schüler Union, followed by her joining the CDU in 1981. Relatively late, in 2016, Karin Prien publicly acknowledged her Jewish roots.
