During the Second World War, Poland was particularly hard hit by annihilation and violence. Symbols of this suffering include the widespread destruction of Warsaw, the liquidation of the Jewish ghetto, and the resistance offered by the Polish and Jewish population.
The tour on 1 August, the day commemorating the Warsaw Uprising, focuses on objects that were displayed in early postwar exhibitions in Poland, like those in the National Museum in Warsaw and in the Jewish Historical Institute.
Among the objects are the bronze head of the national poet Adam Mickiewicz and a postcard with a picture of the damaged Great Synagogue.
The tour invites visitors to reflect on the way national identity and stories of heroism were staged in postwar Poland, but also on the effect the early exhibitions have had on the current culture of remembrance.
