guided tour
The Ministry for State Security (Stasi) was both a secret police force and a foreign intelligence service. Its foreign intelligence operations are often described as the "best in the world" at the time.
Markus Wolf, head of the Main Directorate for Reconnaissance (HV A) and long known to Western intelligence agencies as "the man without a face," and the "Rosenholz" files still carry an aura of secrecy. This is largely due to the fact that many documents—and thus also evidence—about the Stasi's activities in the West were destroyed in 1989/90.
Nevertheless, it is still often possible to find information about the number of spies, the quality of their reports, and how they were processed. The tour traces the history of East German foreign intelligence and shows which holdings of the Federal Archives—the Stasi Records Archive—still contain material on this fascinating chapter of the Cold War.
Following the tour, you can visit the sample file collection of the Stasi Records Archive. Furthermore, it is possible to submit a request for access to files directly on site.
The number of participants is limited to 15 people.
