Ft. Lindy Fay & Veland (NO), Vilma Jää (FI), Sara Parkman (SE) u. a.

What does courage sound like? And what role does music play in the fight for equality? The exhibition *The Sound of Courage – Music and Equality in the Nordic Countries* explores these questions. As the highlight of the accompanying program, the Nordic embassies, in collaboration with the Kesselhaus at the Kulturbrauerei, invite you to a special mini-festival.

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., some of the most exciting acts on the Nordic music scene will come together:

From Norway come Lindy-Fay Hella & Sondre Veland, who create fascinating soundscapes—blending folk, ritual, and the sounds of nature—through their voices and percussive improvisation.

Also performing is Sara Parkman (SE), one of the most influential voices in Scandinavian folk, who powerfully blends tradition, feminism, and performance. Vilma Jää (FI) rounds out the lineup with her unique blend of traditional and contemporary forms of expression. Additional artists from Iceland and Denmark will follow. Blending Nordic folk, experimental sounds, and strong artistic visions, the evening will musically explore the themes of the exhibition—in an open, powerful, and surprising way.

A festival for music lovers, culture enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to discover extraordinary voices from the North.

Lindy Fay & Veland (NO)

Hailing from the Stril region north of Bergen, singer Lindy-Fay Hella and drummer and percussionist Sondre Veland bring an extraordinary musical collaboration to the stage. The focus is on compositions from Hella’s solo album “Seafarer” as well as selected works from her collaboration with the artist collective Dei Farne.

Audiences have come to know this expressive Norwegian artist primarily through her long-standing involvement with Wardruna. Together with Sondre Veland, she has performed on international stages for many years. Away from life on tour, both frequently found inspiration in nature—on long hikes and while exploring new landscapes.

It was precisely there that spontaneous musical moments repeatedly arose: improvisations born of voice, rhythm, and intuition that developed as if by themselves. From these experiences grew the desire to bring this special form of creative dialogue to life on stage.

For this project, Lindy-Fay Hella invited her longtime collaborator Sondre Veland to Berlin. Together, they create a soundscape full of authenticity, intensity, and freedom. Their music draws on Nordic folk tales, the power of nature, and those mysterious realms of our perception that are often more intuited than explained.

Sara Parkman (SE)

Sara Parkman is one of the most influential artists on the Swedish folk scene. For more than 15 years, she has consistently evolved the tradition of Scandinavian folk music, blending her roots with a distinctive, bold artistic expression. For her work, she has been awarded a Swedish Grammy, among other honors, and has received numerous accolades for her musical contributions.

Her music moves effortlessly between the sacred and the immediate, between rural roots and the energy of nightlife. From these contrasts, Parkman creates a soundscape that is as powerful as it is moving.

As a violinist, singer, and composer, she is far more than just an outstanding musician. Through her projects, she challenges existing notions of folk music and opens up new perspectives on a genre that remains vibrant, relevant, and surprising in her hands. Always in search of new forms of expression, Sara Parkman continues to explore the artistic and emotional possibilities of her music.

VILMA JÄÄ (FI)

Vilma Jää is one of the most distinctive voices of a new generation of Nordic folk artists. The Finnish ethno-pop musician draws her inspiration from strong emotions and the darker facets of the human condition. In her music, traditional instruments blend with electronic sounds, while Finno-Ugric vocal traditions meet contemporary pop aesthetics.

She gained international attention as a folk singer in Kaija Saariaho’s widely acclaimed opera “Innocence.” With her debut album “Kosto” (2023), Vilma Jää made a striking impression. The album was honored with both an Emma Award and the title of Folk Album of the Year.

With her distinctive voice and fearless artistic expression, she moves effortlessly between archaic traditions and a modern musical language. Her songs revolve around questions of identity, nature, and human existence, connecting personal experiences with broader social and cultural contexts.

On her second album, “Loitsui ja Taikoi,” released this year, Vilma Jää expands her fascinating musical world with new facets. As a charismatic stage artist, she draws on traditional elements to create something unique and contemporary—powerful, mysterious, and full of intensity.
