Summer Festival on the HKW Roof Terrace

The HKW Summer Festival on the roof terrace kicks off on 27 June with a reading by Linton Kwesi Johnson, followed by a concert by Queen Omega & The Royal Souls.

Linton Kwesi Johnson
Reading

Linton Kwesi Johnson, who came to London in 1963 at the age of eleven as part of the first generation of Caribbean immigrants, has always understood writing as a political act and poetry and music as a means of cultural struggle.

It is no coincidence that he is opening this year's Sonic Pluriverse Festival: Bass Cultures with a reading of his poems.
Johnson joined the British Black Panthers while still at secondary school. He studied sociology and spent his life as a poet, activist, Grammy-nominated musician, teacher, journalist, publicist and producer.

Queen Omega & The Royal Souls

Queen Omega, born in Trinidad, combines reggae, calypso, soca, jazz and soul. She is considered an icon of roots reggae, with her own pointed lyrics, deeply rooted in her Rastafarian faith and often with a critical, feminist message. At the Sonic Pluriverse Festival: Bass Cultures, she will perform together with the band The Royal Souls.

  • 7:00–8:00 p.m. Linton Kwesi Johnson
  • 8:30–10:00 p.m. Queen Omega & The Royal Souls
  • 10:00 p.m.–midnight DJ set

From June to August, the third edition of the Sonic Pluriverse music festival brings bass, beats and stories of resistance to the HKW roof terrace.
