New Berlin Songs and Soviet Rock'n'Roll, Jewish Songs, Tangos & Cabaret

The title may be a bit confusing, but yes, that was the name of the biggest post-war hit by the Jewish-Austrian entertainer Hermann Leopoldi – after his exile in the USA. From chansons and folklore to Yiddish songs and his own contemporary songs, this title now provides the theme.

Some of the songs in the program come from old gramophone records from the 1930s to the 1960s, which – once recorded by successful singers and film orchestras – are still popular and present in everyday life.

Russian jazz was born in Odessa – where else? The Ukrainian-Russian trio Scho from Berlin is an important representative of this musical genre.

Lineup:

  • GENNADI DESATNIK (violin, guitar, vocals, compositions)
  • VALERIY KHORYSHMAN (accordion, vocals, arrangements)
  • ALEXANDER FRANZ (double bass, vocals)

With charm and vivacity, they interpret a palette of songs and music that originates from the once unusual atmosphere of the multi-ethnic metropolises of Kyiv and Odessa: "Odessa Mama," Russian romances "in swing," a ride on a Kyiv tram.

The Trio Scho was founded in 1991 in the Ukrainian city of Poltava. The trio has been based in Berlin since 1994. They have collaborated with Karsten Troyke since 1999.

The trio has performed Yiddish song programs at venues including the Klezmer Festival in Ancona, Brussels, Vienna, Paris, and Warsaw. They have participated in the documentary and concert film "Yiddish Soul" (ARTE). Trio Scho presents its diverse repertoire on radio and television. Among other things, the trio was featured in Christoph Schlingensief's legendary "Talk 2000" (VOX), and as a film band, Trio Scho played in the ten-part series "In the Face of Crime." In 2000 and 2011, the trio won the Berlin Senate Music Competition.

And it is precisely this Eastern European cosmopolitanism of their music that suits the Yiddish tangos, cabaret songs, and chansons with which Karsten Troyke achieved international acclaim. He is an actor, voice artist, but also a singer and songwriter—above all, an idiosyncratic performer—with a strangely raspy voice. He has performed programs with his own songs and lyrics on his tours, especially in recent years.

The theater opens at 6:30 p.m.
