Flemish Master Drawings

The exhibition presents a selection of approximately 100 Flemish Baroque drawings from the collection of the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings). The focus is on outstanding works by Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens, and Anton van Dyck. These are complemented by drawings from lesser-known masters such as Lucas van Uden, Pieter de Jode, and Abraham van Diepenbeeck.

The period between 1580 and 1660 was characterized by ongoing conflicts between European powers on the one hand and religious factions on the other, as well as by the emergence of a global trade network. During this turbulent era, Antwerp developed into the most important European trading center and a hotspot of artistic production in the late 16th century.

The exhibited drawings were created in preparation for completed works:
In addition to initial sketches, the exhibition features powerful figure studies, colored designs for tapestries, and preliminary drawings for paintings.

The drawings thus offer direct insights into the creative process and illustrate the unexpected diversity of Flemish art.
