The exhibition PULP.MICRO.META. examines colonial imagery and power relations in the medium of comics – from historical microcuentos to current artistic positions.

PULP.MICRO.META. – Exhibition on Colonial Imagery in Comics

The focus is on the analysis of microcuentos, Mexican booklet-sized comics that are heavily influenced by US pulp magazines. Sensationalism, sexualized depictions, and stereotypical motifs continue to characterize many visual narrative forms. The exhibition illuminates how these imagery reflects colonial, social, and gender-political structures – and continues to have an impact today.

Original editions, cover designs, sketches, and interviews from the Microcuentos archive are on display. Contemporary works by artists Iurhi Peña, Floresrosx/Poni Alta, and Salvador Jacobo complement the material with new, critical perspectives.

In addition, a connection is drawn to the East German comic series Die Digedags, which reproduced racist stereotypes despite its anti-colonial intentions.

The project is a collaboration between Schwarzenberg e.V., Rice University in Houston (curator: Christoph Sperandio), and the Mexican author and curator Oscar G. Hernández.
