Young talents to the conductor's podium!
Ninety talented students are participating again this year in the groundbreaking programme ‘Promoting Young Ensemble Conductors,’ a project initiated in 2018 by the Landesmusikrat Berlin e.V. in cooperation with the Senate Department for Education. Under the guidance of an outstanding team of instructors, the young people learn how to conduct and lead rehearsals.
On 9 November 2025 at 5 p.m., they will showcase their skills with works from classical music, big band standards, pop and choral music in the concert hall of the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) on Hardenbergstraße.
The young people will undergo three intensive rehearsal weekends, supported by a team of experienced lecturers. The aim is to promote young talent in music education. In fact, after the courses, some participants decide to study music education. Young people are in demand: there is already a dramatic shortage of music teachers, and this will become even more acute in the near future. Getting young people interested in music education courses is the focus of the programme, which is now attracting national attention. ‘A magnificent project,’ was the verdict of the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2023 in an extensive report. The project is under the patronage of Vladimir Jurowski, chief conductor and artistic director of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (rsb).
This year, the programme focuses on orchestra, big band and choir. It teaches not only the basics of conducting, but also methodology, music theory and rehearsal planning. Repertoire knowledge is expanded and participants' own musicality is further developed. Those who take part play at least one instrument and can read music. The young people form ensembles from their own ranks, which they take turns to conduct. It's a demanding workload. But music education courses also place complex demands on students. Journalists can attend rehearsals again this year by arrangement. At the end of the concert, everyone will perform Adele's ‘Skyfall’ together.
The final concert, featuring classical works, big band standards, pop and choral music, will take place on 9 November 2025 at 5 p.m. in the concert hall of the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) on Hardenbergstraße.
Admission is free.
