In a panel discussion, Martin Maischberger (Collection of Classical Antiquities, National Museums in Berlin), Michael Falser (Heidelberg University), and Hanno Hochmuth (Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam) will offer insights into the historical and political significance of three gateway structures:

the propylon to the Sanctuary of Athena at Pergamon in the Pergamon Museum; the Sanchi Gate, a replica of which has been reproduced many times, with the most recent replica located opposite Museum Island on the other side of the Lustgarten; and Portal IV of the reconstructed Royal Palace (now a northwest entrance to the Humboldt Forum), the original of which is part of the adjacent State Council Building.

The event is being held to mark the bicentenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Old Museum (1825).

Moderated by Catalina Heroven and Romina Dümler (Project Wide Angle – Global Collection Perspectives, Museum Island Team).

Admission is free. Registration is requested.
