The Last Women of the East,” created in the Mahler class at the renowned Ostkreuz School of Photography, photographer Isabel Kittler addresses the moving and pressing question: “What remains of the women who were born and raised in the GDR, educated and collectively socialized there—and who spent roughly half their lives under a dictatorship?”

The exhibition features striking portraits of women whose life stories are closely tied to a defunct state—yet at the same time extend far beyond it.
It is about memory and identity, about strength, loss, and change. It is about women who have lived through and overcome societal upheavals—and who nevertheless often remain invisible in the public memory. The PHOTOBOOK, published by MMKoehn Verlag Leipzig and featuring texts, photos, and quotes from each protagonist, is also on display.
What defines this generation? What can they pass on to future generations—or will they be forgotten?
