Masterpieces from all art-historical periods, including paintings by van Eyck, Bruegel, Dürer, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Vermeer, are on display here. The new building at the Kulturforum offers an exhibition space of approximately 7,000 square meters.
A nearly 2-kilometer-long tour with 72 galleries and cabinets leads through individual art movements and eras. The collection focuses on German and Italian painting from the 13th to the 16th centuries and Dutch painting from the 15th to the 16th centuries. Early German painting from the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods is represented by renowned artists such as Konrad Witz, Albrecht Dürer, Baldung Grien, Cranach, and Holbein.
The room housing Rembrandt’s paintings is highlighted by its central location in the museum. With 16 works by the artist, the collection ranks among the largest and highest-quality in the world. It is flanked by additional works of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting. Portraits, genre paintings, interiors, landscapes, and still lifes attest to the artists’ specialization in specific themes.
Eighteenth-century Italian, French, German, and English painting is presented in six rooms. The extensive collection of paintings includes works by Canaletto, Watteau, Pesne, and Gainsborough. Approximately 1,000 masterpieces are on display in the main gallery.
Audio tours in German, English, French, and Italian are available to visitors.
