Two mornings for The Ring of the Nibelung: Elias Corrinth is devoting a two-part series to Wagner's monumental work. On September 20, the focus will be on the backstories in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre – from Siegfried's parents and grandparents to the dramatic separation of the world of the gods.
On September 27, Siegfried & Götterdämmerung follows: the six-part life story of the title character and the decline of the old order.
This division makes Wagner's artistic development over two decades comprehensible – from the clear leitmotif structure in the dialogue-rich Rheingold to the dense, musically layered symbolism of Götterdämmerung. What did Wagner understand by the term "music drama" – and does his first work perhaps already fulfill this most fully?
With an expert eye and subtle humor, Corrinth also illuminates topics such as: Wagner's use of alliteration, Fafner's transformation from a fourth to a tritone monster, Siegfried's political dimension, conducting technique, performance tradition, epic versus dramatic structures - and, of course, the most important leitmotifs.
