Decades after the end of the Second World War, a sculpture created in 1939 as decoration for the Nazi party rally grounds in Nuremberg is becoming a trend on social media: Bereitschaft (Readiness) by Arno Breker (1900–1991).
The current whereabouts of the sculpture Bereitschaft are unknown. But the countless photos and small replicas show a male figure with particularly well-defined muscles, a pronounced chin and furrowed brows.
With their equally monumental video sculpture, Jakob Ganslmeier and Ana Zibelnik create an initially primarily sensual approach to the strategy of overwhelming the viewer, which was intended for the original bronze as well as for its current use as a major TikTok event. However, with their work, they distantly and analytically dismantle any semblance of a harmless longing for male beauty.
The artistic work finds its perfect place as an intervention in the museum Enthüllt. Berlin und seine Denkmäler (Unveiled: Berlin and its Monuments) between the original works of the Nazi sculptors Arno Breker and Josef Thorak.
