On 1 September 1939 the German Wehrmacht invaded Poland, marking the beginning of the Second World War. The tour concentrates on the Nazi occupation and the Polish resistance.
Selected objects help to show the story of the reconstruction of Warsaw after the destruction of the city and of the Polish cultural heritage. This involves the difficult question of how this rebuilding could be carried out in a country that had defended itself against the German invaders but had not taken a resolute stand against the antisemitic ideology that went along with the occupation.
The tour invites visitors to reflect on remembrance, blind spots, and the politics of history in postwar Poland.
