People and houses each have their own unique histories. Britz Palace, built around 1700, is also closely connected to the lives of those who once lived here.
The current exhibition explores the period between 1924 and 1945 as the occasion for a presentation of contemporary art. During those years, the manor house had newly come into the possession of the City of Berlin and was divided into four rental apartments.
No visible traces of the former residents have survived in today's magnificently reconstructed design. Only a few photographs of people and interior spaces, as well as a few surviving documents, can shed light on the 20 years or so that preceded its use as a municipal children's home (1945-1985) – and subsequently as a museum and exhibition space.
The exhibition "Movables – What You Take With You Are the Things" now speculates about what traces the former tenants may have left behind in Britz Palace.
- What might the rooms have been designed in? Can we make assumptions about the tastes of the people, about the belongings, everyday objects, and interiors of those who moved out again by 1945 at the latest?
- What survives over time?
- What is taken with them when they move, and what is forgotten or lost?
The artists Fides Becker, Anja Teske, and Julia Ziegler portray everyday objects, focusing in very different ways on their form, material, or context.
Using photographs, objects, murals, and paintings, they now revitalize the spaces in a new and different way. They address the vacancy of the past in this period with a sensual, hypothetical presence. The history of the house and the people is juxtaposed with a history of things. Things are always simply there – the connections, memories, and ideas intertwine in the minds of the viewers.
An exhibition with works by Fides Becker, Anja Teske, and Julia Ziegler.
Curated by Rebekka Liebmann and Dr. Martin Steffens together with the artists.
The exhibition is complemented by a varied accompanying program with guided tours, performances, readings, and artist talks.
