The main aim was the comprehensive surveillance of an individual and their social circle. Filtering out information on potentially oppositional behaviour and preventing activities that could undermine the SED dictatorship’s hold on power were the stated objectives behind measures such as mail inspections, the covert surveillance of people of almost every age group, and even the so-called ‘subversion’.
- How were these methods planned and carried out? Did those affected notice this?
- What consequences did these measures have for them?
Using case studies and examples from the files, the guided tour illustrates the function and role of the various surveillance methods employed by the Stasi.
Following the tour, you can visit the Stasi Records Archive’s collection of sample files and submit an application to view the files on the spot.
The number of participants is limited to 15. Advance booking is possible at: besuch.stasiunterlagenarchiv@bundesarchiv.de or by telephone on 030 18 665-6699.
