Mark Turner is one of the most influential jazz saxophonists of our time. A thoughtful and introspective artist, Turner studied at the Berklee College of Music and has long been regarded as a master of his craft—thanks to his intensity, intellectual depth, and meticulous attention to detail.

Since the early 1990s, he has been part of the elite circle shaping modern jazz, performing alongside legends like Jimmy Smith, Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Brian Blade, and many others. His crystal-clear articulation, impressive range, and rhythmically and harmonically sophisticated language make his sound instantly recognizable.

Turner is also known for his passion for science fiction literature—the title of his album Return from the Stars was inspired by the novel of the same name by Polish author Stanisław Lem. This fascination is reflected in his music, where tradition and innovation merge seamlessly.

His current quartet project marks a milestone in both his compositional and artistic journey, further showcasing his conceptual strength as a bandleader. With no chordal instrument such as piano or guitar, the ensemble offers ample space for individual expression within the dynamic framework Turner provides.

Solos emerge organically from the arrangements, and the interaction between Turner’s tenor saxophone and Jason Palmer’s trumpet creates a strikingly immersive front line, while the rhythm section—featuring Joe Martin on bass and Jonathan Pinson on drums—moves with remarkable freedom.
