The Nikolaiviertel (Nikolai Quarter), named after the towering St. Nicholas Church, stretches between the Red Town Hall and the banks of the Spree. This partially restored, but largely newly built district is intended to convey a sense of what Berlin was once like.

The ambitious project to rebuild the dilapidated district began in the early 1980s and was presented by the GDR government as a showcase for Berlin's 750th anniversary.

The tour passes the imposing equestrian statue of St. George, the Knoblauchhaus (Garlic House), the Ephraim Palace, and the Zille Museum.

Many small shops, inns, cafés, and traditional stores selling German handicrafts create an almost small-town market atmosphere. The otherworldly feeling is completed by the carillon of St. Nicholas Church, which rings three times a day.
