Displaced and forgotten? - Sahrawi refugee camps in the Western Sahara

In 1975, Spain handed over its African colony of Western Sahara to Morocco, and the Spanish dictator Franco rejected a future socialist government of the Frente Polisario.

Since then, the King of Morocco has regarded Western Sahara as his property - available for economic exploitation. In the beginning war against the Frente Polisario, Hassan II had the Sahrawis bombed with phosphorus and napalm, so that many of the Sahrawis fled to the safety of the restricted military area of southern Algeria. They have lived there ever since. 170,000 women, men and children in refugee camps. In the desert - in UNHCR tents and simple, self-built mud houses. Forgotten?

The Berlin photographer Evelin Frerk - together with the well-known actress Erika Pluhar - has been to the refugee camps several times and has photographed and documented the people and life there.
