The pangs of love, a magnificent ball, a rural idyll, the walk to the scaffold, and a witches’ sabbath: In his *Symphonie fantastique*, Hector Berlioz presents a grand musical drama full of delicate, iridescent, and grotesque timbres.
His virtuoso handling of the orchestra also inspired Richard Wagner, whose Wesendonck Lieder are considered a preliminary study for the opera *Tristan und Isolde*. During its guest performance in Berlin, the German National Youth Orchestra—composed of Germany’s most talented young musicians between the ages of 14 and 19—will perform both works.
