For 40 years, the Stasi secured the rule of the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED). In its "fight against the enemy," the Ministry for State Security expanded ever further—in Lichtenberg and throughout East Germany.
In 1990, courageous citizens not only saved the secret police's files from destruction, but also reclaimed Mielke's headquarters as a public space. Today, the Stasi Records Archive is located here, educating the public about the Stasi's activities and its archives.
"A monument to surveillance": The Stasi Records Archive houses 111 kilometers of files, many of which contain personal data about individuals—collected by the state. The exhibition "A Glimpse into the Secret" makes the significance of this archive tangible.
After the guided tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the sample file collection. It consists of reproductions of original Stasi documents. In addition to files on the subject matter and personnel of Stasi officers, you will also find files of those affected. They have agreed to the publication of their documents, making a "glimpse into the secret" possible.
