Theme days Opening Family matters

Cakes, flowers, and care go hand in hand. Baking a cake—for family, friends, or yourself—is often an expression of affection and love.

Floristaurant is the artistic culinary project of Berlin-based Portuguese artist Marisa Benjamin. She presents artistically decorated cakes with edible, seasonal flowers. Arranged like a still life on a large table, the focus is initially on the visual experience. Benjamin introduces the concept of edible flowers and the Floristaurant project – then it's time to taste.

Even though eating cake may initially seem like a purely pleasurable activity, the ingredients are carefully selected: they are intended to nourish and do good, and are chosen with care for loved ones and guests. Often, these are rare or forgotten ingredients – an act of care conveyed through conscious cooking.

At Floristaurant, Marisa Benjamin collects knowledge about plants and highlights how limited the diversity of Western diets often is – and shows ways to expand it. The project is both a local collection of edible plants and a culinary travel diary: the artist brings back unusual flowers and plants from her travels, which she uses in cakes, soups, or salads.

Marisa Benjamim (Portugal, 1981) is a Berlin-based interdisciplinary artist. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Sculpture from ESTGAD, Caldas da Rainha. She earned a Master’s degree in Art in Context from Universität der Künste (UdK) Berlin, Germany, and a Master’s degree in Arts from ESAD, Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.

Her work investigates healing, ecology, and the politics of care through plants, food, and gardens. Her multi-sensory installations and site-specific projects use edibility as a medium of art working normally in collaboration, shared learning, and ecological awareness.
