Additional site in a UNESCO World Heritage: Horseshoe Estate, Berlin-Neukölln-Britz
Berlin presents itself as a World Heritage City of Modernism that is as complex as it is multi-faceted. The aim of this year's Berlin Triennale Programme is therefore to raise awareness about the age of emerging modernism including the Bauhaus - the famous school, which had an enormous influence, but grew up posthumously and along winding paths to become a global umbrella brand of timeless design.
The combination of café and exhibition in the head building of the famous and huge horseshoe-shaped building structure designed by architect Bruno Taut will serve as the second festival centre, located in the rather suburban green disctrict of Nekölln-Britz. During the "Triennale of Modernity" from 11 to 13 October 2019 it will be opened from 10 am to 6 pm.
The "Infostation Hufeisensiedlung" (normally only opened on Fr and Sun afternoon) and is run voluntarily by a local civil association, who serve coffee and cake and provide a charming meeting place for residents. But it is also completed by a bilingual exhibition on the history and present of the largest – and certainly most famous – out of the six Berlin World Heritage Settlement. This exhibition also covers the other five World Heritage estates and makes the Infostation the first port of call for architctural tourists.
The café offers a variety of drinks, coffee specialities, homemade cakes and a book shop with a small, selected assortment of architectural books, city maps and other items for sale.
As a special the supporting organisation of the "Friends and Supporters of the Horseshoe Estate" offers three guided walks, each starting at 10am. The tours are predominantly in German though.
Another specific event is associated with a another specific site entitled "Taut´s Home", a museum-like terraced house with garden, that offers overnight accommodation with self-catering and a time-travel experience for lovers of fine architecture of the 1920s. The house was developed by two private residents and frequently awarded.
