The Roman aristocratic families, who also provided the popes in the 17th century, outdid each other as patrons of poets, composers, architects and sculptors. The pioneer was the Barberini family, from which Urban VIII came, who had a decisive influence on Baroque Rome as Pope for 21 years.

Performer(s):
Till Schulze - Bass, tutti i bassi: Michael Dollendorf - Lirone & Viola Bastarda, Andreas Hetze - Harpsichord, Knut Trautvetter - Chitarrone & Baroque Guitar

Works performed:

Dramatic cantatas, Petrarch sonnets, Song of Songs settings and instrumental music by Kapsperger, Frescobaldi, Stradella, Puliaschi, Bertoli and Caldara

Even before he ascended the papal throne, concerts were regularly held in Palazzo Barberini. Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger and Girolamo Frescobaldi were the stars of these events. Alessandro Stradella, a generation younger, was promoted in Rome above all by Christina of Sweden, who settled in Rome after her abdication.

Roman music was characterised above all by vocal works for virtuoso singers. In contrast to other Italian cities, there is a larger repertoire for the bass voice, which is presented in this programme.
