The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom – William Blake

Excess is often seen in a negative light: be it that we exceed limits, such as the speed limit and thus risk a fine, be it that we recklessly consume resources, such as by deforestation, and thus accept serious consequences for the environment, or be it that, when associated with pleasure, it is often accompanied by feelings of guilt and danger or even death.

In our personal lives, excess can manifest itself as a means of self-harm or self-expression on both a physical and mental level. It can be seen in overindulgence in food and alcohol, substance abuse, and even mental illness characterized by an excess of emotions that society believes should be "regulated". In analog photography, an excess of movement or exposure time is often seen as an obstacle to achieving optimal results and is considered a mistake.

The concept of excess is inherently relative to a norm. While some instances of excess require our attention to prevent harm, others warrant the question: who or what determines what is excessive and what conforms to the norm? When should the norm be respected, and when and how should it be questioned or challenged?

Excess can be perceived as a deviation or a problem, but for some it is also a means of breaking free from societal norms, a decisive step in life or a demand for more freedom. Is it something to be restrained or could it be the "path to wisdom"?
