A Divided Life: Art and Migration in Berlin.

This year, the museum is focusing heavily on the history of migration in Berlin. This evening, we’ll be celebrating the opening of the new exhibition on this topic.

What is it like to live amidst different places, languages, and memories?

The special exhibition presents Berlin as a city where art and migration histories are closely intertwined. You’ll encounter artistic works spanning from the 1970s to the present.

On display are rarely seen works from the Berlin Museum’s collection as well as works on loan. They tell stories of exile, everyday life, and self-determination. Archival material and audio interviews with the artists complement the works and offer cross-border perspectives on Berlin’s history and stories.

Introduction and Discussion

Christine Heidemann, Aurora Rodonò, Pia Dressler, and Antonia Welch Guerra from the Berlin Museum’s curatorial team will chat with the artists in attendance. Over drinks and music, you’ll have the chance to strike up a conversation with them throughout the evening.

DJ Set/Get-together and Exhibition Tour

DJ kimbwazo will accompany the opening with a mix of Congolese, Cuban, and Spanish sounds. As one of the hosts and bookers of “La Regla,” Berlin’s longest-running intergenerational Latin party, she is committed to Afro-diasporic and femme representation. In doing so, she creates inclusive spaces where the community can let loose and feel at home.

Tip: Concurrently with “Shared Lives: Art and Migration in Berlin,” the Gropius Bau is presenting the exhibition “Kreuzberg: Art and Migration Since 1960.” It focuses on art created in connection with labor migration in Kreuzberg.
