A musical loosely based on Chekhov Music: Wolfgang Böhmer, Lyrics: Martin G. Berger

The cherry orchard is for sale! So, the second cherry orchard. The first stood many years ago on another continent. Varja is only 37 years old and didn’t live to see it; even her stepmother Andrea only remembers it from stories – and yet somehow they bear so much, these few trees: dreams, memories, the eroding tectonics of the world, and, of course, kilos of cherries.

Where will they go? And what will happen to the cherry orchard? The arriving family members have very different answers to these questions: capitalist, idealistic, pragmatic, young, old. And no one seems to fit in a world where all the cards are being reshuffled.

Author Martin G. Berger and composer Wolfgang Böhmer use Chekhov’s classic The Cherry Orchard to address current questions such as ownership, inheritance, and intergenerational justice, addressing them in a contemporary setting. In the new musical, directed by Alexandra Liedtke, they shy away from neither wit nor complexity, transporting the audience into a dazzling world of sound.
