The KungerKiezTheater is back. Following six months of refurbishment work, the curtain will rise again in September.

As part of the general refurbishment of the Park Center Treptow, the move within the shopping centre was unavoidable. The work was carried out almost entirely by volunteers, who put in countless hours.

Funds raised through initiatives such as a specially organised charity run helped to cover the construction costs, supplementing the funding provided by the Treptow-Köpenick District Office and numerous other public and private supporters.

“Thanks to our many years of work in the local community, we have developed a certain knack for converting and transforming spaces. But this refurbishment was a particularly major undertaking. We are therefore all the more delighted that we can now once again open the doors of our new theatre home to the general public,” said Michael R. Schmitz, theatre director and chair of the KungerKiezInitiative.

The grand reopening will take place on 12 September 2026, an event which District Mayor Oliver Igel, amongst others, has confirmed he will attend. As was the case in 2022 at the theatre’s original opening at the Center Treptow, the new stage will be inaugurated with the children’s classic *Die beschwundenen Käsekuchen*. This will be followed by a small, colourful celebration to mark this further milestone in the history of the KungerKiezTheater, attended by supporters, friends and the theatre’s loyal audience, with live music and a buffet.

The new programme is also finalised and appeals to an audience aged two to 99. Plays for children and young people remain the main focus, but (new) plays for adults, as well as readings and musical guest performances, are also planned for the two stages. Almost coinciding with the start of the school year,

theatre groups for children and young people are also resuming rehearsals.
