Nora Zabel talks to Aron Boks about 35 years of "German unity"

Young authors from East and West tell the story: “We can do it.” More than ten years ago, then-Chancellor Angela Merkel uttered this phrase in light of the challenges Germany would face by accepting tens of thousands of people fleeing Syria to Europe.

A statement brimming with optimism for a time that transformed the social landscape for many. PEGIDA demonstrations grew larger, the AfD gained ground, and at the same time, a segment of the younger generation began to experience its first political awakening.

But how have the country and the social climate in East and West Germany changed since then, up to the 36th anniversary of German reunification?

As usual in this series, people who did not consciously experience either the GDR or the Federal Republic speak with one another to try to make history more tangible and the present more understandable. In this installment of the series, podcaster and CDU politician Nora Zabel, born in Hagenow, and author Aron Boks, born in Wernigerode, discuss these topics.
