Campus Cinema: Films at the Stasi Headquarters Kicks Off on August 4!

Once again this year, we’ll spend four weeks showing feature films and documentaries centered around the themes of freedom, repression, and life in the former GDR.

Campus Cinema is the open-air summer cinema in Lichtenberg — just under 20 minutes from Berlin Central Station on the U5 line, and only 11 minutes from Alexanderplatz. Right in the heart of the periphery, so to speak.

A rich accompanying program of guided tours — including the grounds, exhibitions, and archives — complements the film screenings. On Mondays, in collaboration with the MACHmit! Museum for Children, we offer a family-friendly program suitable for ages 8 and up.

Engaging guest speakers follow the films and bring additional depth to the topics. In the early evening, local organizations such as the Doping Victims’ Support Group and the Union of Victims of Communist Tyranny will also present their work.

The cinematic highlights certainly include the opening night (Monday, August 4, 2025) with the feature film Zuckersand. The evening will be hosted by Wolfgang Porsche (radio eins), and the three heads of the partner organizations—Alexandra Titze (Vice President of the Federal Archives/Stasi Records Archive), Frank Ebert (Berlin Commissioner for Reappraisal), and Rebecca Hernandez Garcia (Robert Havemann Society)—will be present.

Other standout documentaries include Guten Morgen ihr Schönen (August 5), a fairly recent and very compelling film about women in the GDR, with author Katja Lange-Müller as a guest on stage; and Stasi FC (August 19), which explores football and the Stasi, featuring former professional footballer Dirk Schlegel as a stage guest—he fled with Falko Götz during a guest appearance in Yugoslavia.

So there’s plenty to discover!

Admission is, as always, free.
