Breathing Matter(s): Memories of Representation – Short film programme

Whether in a dialogue between director and protagonist, as a collective act of remembrance, in the form of an elliptical love story, or as a montage of two capitalist luxury fantasies:
these films explore the stories we tell, the images we create of one another, and the systems and structures that emerge from them. Each in its own formally distinct way, the films engage with (self-)fictionalization, the ethnographic-documentary gaze, representation, intimacy, and coloniality.

The A-Team
Nnenna Onuoha (USA 2021, 17 min)Over the phone, thirteen friends reminisce about their Ghanaian high school’s exchange trip to Jackson, Mississippi a decade earlier. The more they remember, the uncannier it becomes. Comprised of a mix of black and blurry images, the visuals mimic the group’s memory blocks and uncertainties, as well as those moments that they struggle to confront from the present day.

Notes of a Crocodile (Eyu shouji)
Daphne Xu (Cambodia, China, Canada 2024, 18 min, OwES)News of a half-constructed building full of crocodiles brings a Chinese woman to Phnom Penh. She walks along the Mekong River in search of a lost friend.

The Labyrinth
Laura Huertas Millán (France, Columbia 2018, 21 min)A voyage into the labyrinthine memories of Cristobal Gomez, who worked for the drug Lords in the Colombian Amazon back in the 80s. Following his path between the forest and the ruin of a Narco’s mansion imitating the Carrington mansion in the soap opera Dynasty, the film unfolds the hallucinatory account of a near-death experience.
