Germany’s Russia policy

When Vladimir Putin launched his attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the world was left in shock. Yet this war had been precisely predicted by intelligence agencies.

Drawing on numerous classified documents and conversations with dozens of eyewitnesses, Katja Gloger and Georg Mascolo now tell a breathtaking story: about the true background of Putin’s much-acclaimed speech in the Bundestag; about a secret dossier from the German Foreign Office that already in 2007 described the prospect of an armed conflict over Crimea and eastern Ukraine—and then disappeared into the archives.

Katja Gloger and Georg Mascolo have received multiple awards for their work and spent many years writing for Der Spiegel. Since the attack on Ukraine, public perceptions of Russia in Germany have changed dramatically. Yet this development could have been foreseen. Based on their most recent and comprehensive research, their book documents how those responsible in German politics ignored warning signs for years and failed to listen to critical voices on Germany’s policy toward Russia.

So what went wrong in German policy toward Russia? The stage is set for Katja Gloger and Georg Mascolo!
