Star pianist Daniil Trifonov, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Kirill Petrenko have performed together on numerous occasions, described by the press as a “sonic storm” and an “inspired exchange,” a collaboration that now continues with Johannes Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
Moving between the delicacy of chamber music and symphonic power, Trifonov is able to fully display his technical brilliance and emotional expressiveness here.
The second part of the evening features Richard Strauss’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Beginning with a hymnal sunrise, the work describes the philosopher Zarathustra’s journey to the people—dramatic, mystical, and rich in sound.
